Ancient/Popular Culture

Ancient/Popular Culture are a loosely connected group of paintings which steal (or “quote” if you want to be gentle about it) from contemporary and ancient culture. The idea was that by juxtaposing various, but carefully chosen, stories and imagery, you could evoke a specific mood and a new interpretation. So a deceased Bonnie Parker finds herself in the role of Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz, Churchill and Stalin sign the percentages agreement as the confused lovers Bottom and Titania from A Midsummer Nights Dream, four paintings specifically deal with English folk heroes and art, and another four deal with ideas of family and gender roles with the story of Osiris and Isis as assistance. This is about subverting the stories our culture tells us, which aren’t always pretty.
